The Project
The North Sydney Olympic Pool refurbishment has been one of the most significant infrastructure projects for the North Sydney area. The redevelopment transformed the iconic aquatic facility into a modern, world-class complex while preserving its heritage and community significance.
As part of the refurbishment, upgrading and protecting the security infrastructure across the entire complex was a critical requirement. With extensive CCTV, access control and alarm systems safeguarding the facility, any loss of power to these systems would create immediate security vulnerabilities for both the facility and its visitors.
The Challenge
The refurbished North Sydney Olympic Pool complex required reliable, uninterrupted power protection for its security systems distributed across multiple locations throughout the facility. Key challenges included:
- Multiple security zones: Security systems are spread across the complex, requiring power protection at various distribution points rather than a single centralised location.
- Continuous uptime: CCTV, access control and alarm systems must remain operational during power disturbances, outages or switchover events to maintain facility security at all times.
- Clean power delivery: Sensitive security equipment requires stable, conditioned power free from surges, sags and electrical noise that can cause false alarms, recording gaps or equipment damage.
- Integration with new infrastructure: The UPS and power distribution solution needed to integrate seamlessly with the refurbished facility’s electrical design and security system architecture.
The Solution
NPS supplied and deployed 10 x 2kVA Powershield UPS units with associated Power Distribution Units (PDUs) across the complex, providing dedicated power protection for security systems throughout the facility.

Why This Approach
Deploying multiple smaller UPS units across the complex rather than a single large centralised system provides several advantages for this type of facility. Each 2kVA unit protects a defined zone, meaning a failure or maintenance event on one unit does not compromise security coverage elsewhere. The distributed approach also reduces cabling requirements and ensures clean power is delivered close to the equipment it protects, minimising voltage drop and electrical noise over long cable runs.
The inclusion of PDUs at each location provides managed power distribution with controlled outlets, enabling individual circuit protection and simplified maintenance and troubleshooting for facility staff.
