Founded over 80 years ago, Queensland Medical Laboratory (QML) provides pathology services in Queensland and northern New South Wales.
QML are part of the Primary Health Care Group which has pathology services located across Australia and encompassing all disciplines including: Biochemistry, Microbiology, Virology, Serology, Haematology, Immunology, Cytology, Histopathology, Molecular Biology, and Genetics.
Business Need
QML’s medium sized data centre contains approximately 12 x 42RU racks of equipment and a large IBM server which supports all of QML’s technical, communications, and business operations..
How NPS Helped
NPS supplied QML two APC Galaxy 5000 60kVA UPS systems to replace two existing UPS systems in their data centre in Murarrie, Brisbane. The replacement UPS systems were required urgently as one of the older UPS systems had failed.
Every server and communications device has redundant power supplies, so the two Galaxy 5000 60kVA UPS were configured to operate independently, supplying protected power separately to each of the redundant power supplies in the equipment so that either UPS can support the data centre at any given time.
Result
Currently these UPS are lightly loaded, however the data centre will be expanded to approximately double the current physical size, capacity and load within the next 12 months. Even with this planned increase in capacity, one of the new UPS will still be able to support the full data centre load should this be necessary.
